FAQ
What’s the difference between a local and an express train? 『各駅停車 (kakuekiteisha)』 stops at every station, while 『急行 (kyuukou) 』 and faster categories skip smaller stations to save time. Station signs and train displays usually mark which type is arriving.
Do I need a reserved seat for the shinkansen? Not always. Most shinkansen have both 『指定席 (shiteiseki)』, reserved seating, and 『自由席 (jiyuuseki)』, non-reserved seating, though reserved seats are safer during busy travel periods.
Can I use my IC card on all trains? IC cards work on nearly all urban and regional trains, but some longer-distance or rural lines require a paper ticket instead, especially for reserved seats.
What happens if I miss my stop? Get off at the next station and take a train back the other direction. Staff can help if you explain with 『降りる駅を乗り過ごしました (Oriru eki o norisugoshimashita)』, meaning I missed my stop.
Is it rude to talk on the phone on the train? Yes, it’s generally considered inconsiderate, and most trains post reminders to keep phones on silent and avoid calls. Texting and browsing silently is fine.
Can tourists buy a JR Pass at the station? Some JR Pass types can be purchased or exchanged at major stations with a passport, though it’s often cheaper and faster to arrange in advance online.
What if I lose something on the train? Head to the nearest station’s lost and found, or 『忘れ物センター (wasuremono sentaa)』, and describe the train and time using 『電車に忘れ物をしました (Densha ni wasuremono o shimashita)』, meaning I left something on the train.
